One
of the finest bird parks in the world, Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary or
Keoladeo Ghana Natiuonal Park is a reserve that offers shelter to faunal
species as well. Nesting indigenous water- birds as well as migratory
water birds and waterside birds, this sanctuary is also inhabited by
Sambar, Chital, Nilgai and Boar. The area was declared a national park
on 10 March 1982, and accepted as a World Heritage Site in December
1985. More than 300 species of birds resides in this small wildlife park
of 29-sq-kms of which 11-sq-kms are marshes and the rest scrubland and
grassland. Keoladeo, the name derives from an ancient Hindu temple,
dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is situated at the centre of the park.
Sariska
Tiger Reserve lies amidst the Aravali Hills- 800 sq km of grassland, dry
deciduous forests, sheer cliffs and rocky landscape interspersed with
the ruins of medieval buildings. The area spans some 800 km of dry
deciduous forest and has been known for its tiger and leopard activity.
Large herds of Sambhar and Chital are also found here.Just at the edge
of this reserve is the Siliserh lake and crocodiles can be seen swimming
and basking on the banks. The park has a series of hides and watchtowers
and these can be occupied before sunset so as to observe the large
varieties of animals that come to the water. Occasionally a tiger or
leopard can also be seen. Due to the presence of monuments of religious
importance located within the park boundaries, the park authorities are
compelled to keep the park open throughout the year. Unfortunately, the
only restrictions they are able to impose during this "off-season"
period are those on entry into the jungle routes. The main road is kept
open all year round.. Situated
in Eastern Rajasthan, where the Aravali Hill ranges and the Vindhyan
plateau meet, the Ranthambhore National Park was once the hunting
preserve of the Maharajas of Jaipur. The rivers Chambal in the South and
Banas in the North bound the Ranthambore National Park. Six man made
lakes are the central focus of the park and many perennial streams
criss-cross the entire park. The Ranthambore National Park has internal
drainage and has no link up with any river system, even though two
rivers bound the Park in its north and south side. Van
Vihar, located on Vindhyan plateau, supports a rather open stunted
growth of Dhok and Khair trees. It is inhabited by animals like sambhar,
chital, blue bull, wild boar, sloth bear, hyena and leopard. Tigers were
present in the area till the end of the 1960's. It is recognised by the
Rajasthan Govt.& spread over an area of 59.86. sq. kms, in 1955 A.D.
As a matter of fact these are like two separate wildlife sanctuaries.
The
Desert National Park is an excellent example of the ecosystem of the
Thar desert and its diverse fauna. Sand dunes form around 20% of the
Park. The major landform consists of craggy rocks and compact salt lake
bottoms, intermedial areas and fixed dunes which are quite suitable for
the chinkara to move at high speed. The blackbuck is another common
antelope of this region. Its other notable inhabitants are the desert
fox, Bengal fox, wolf and desert cat. Covering
a total area of 160 sq km, it is famous for Leopards. Jaisamand
Sanctuary was established in the year 1957. The natural environs of. the
sanctuary harbors countless wild species including sloth bear, leopard,
chital, chinkara, wild boar and a number of breeding birds like darter,
open bill stork, pond heron, little cormorant and Indian shag. The lake
is best place to view crocodiles and also a number of fish. This
sanctuary is 50 kms south of Udaipur Kumbhalgarh
is just 90 kms. from Jodhpur on the Udaipur - Pali - Jodhpur road. This
jungle adjoins the historical Kumbalgarh Fort and used to shield the
fort from invaders. Now it protects the rare species of animals,
struggling for their survival. Situated in the lush green region of
Udaipur, Kumbalgarh is the only sanctuary of Rajasthan, where activities
of the rarely found wolf can be seen. More than forty wolves inhabit the
Joba area of the sanctuary. During summer, when water becomes scarce,
pack of wolves roaming around water holes is a common sight. Best time
to visit is March to May and September to November. Famous
for black-bucks, Tal Chappar Sanctuary in Churu district. This Wildlife
Sanctuary lies on the way of the migratory passage of many birds. During
the month of September, this wild life sanctuary comes alive with the
chirping of various migratory birds including montagur's, marsh harrier,
pale harrier, imperial eagle, tawny eagle, short toed eagle, sparrow
hawk, skylark, crested lark, ring drove, brown dove, blue jay, green bee
eaters, black ibis and demoiselle cranes. |
