The 'city of lakes'is perhaps the most romantic and beautiful cities of India. In contrast to Its desert neighbourhood it stands out with an enchanting image of white marble palaces, placid blue lakes, gardens and temples surrounded by hills and mountains. It was founded by Maharaja Udai Singh in 1559 AD on the shores of lake Pichola.

The most striking landmarks of the city are City palace and Lake palace. It developed scientifically, the old city was surrounded by fortified bastions with entry through 11 gates. Ruins of these fortifications are still there, and the more recent palaces can be visited. In fact, a number of the former royal homes are now excellent hotels, allowing you a glimpse into Rajasthan's princely life with all its attendant splendors. Udaipur is known for its fairytale palaces that nestle along the banks of a lake, or completely cover islands in its midst.

The Sisodia rulers of Chittaurgarh who ruled here obviously had more leisure to exercise their taste than at Chittaur where much of their time was spent at war. It situated on the edge of three lakes, its narrow streets lined with shops and craftsmen's ateliers encourage hours of window- shipping for tourists. Udaipur stands out for its heritage, crafts and performing arts and its school of miniature painting is noteworthy.

Where to Eat?
Pushkar is studded with a number of eateries and its air is filled with an aroma of their mouth-watering delicacies. There are quite a lot of rooftop and garden restaurants where you can leisurely enjoy a good meal. For non-vegetarians and alcohol-lovers, Pushkar may prove a big challenge as not only meat and alcohol, even eggs are not allowed in this one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage place. Buffet meals are quite popular here.

Climate
Pushkar has an extreme desert climate, which has hot, scorching days and cold nights in summers while the winters are pleasanter and the temperature ranges around 10ºC. The rainfall is scanty.

• The City Palace
  Overlooking the lake Pichola is the City Palace, a masterpiece - made of marble and granite. City Palace is the largest palace in Rajasthan. Its exclusive worksmanship makes it a must visit sights on every visitor's itinerary. The three mahals - Baari, Dilkush and Moti, the Suraj Gokhada of the Sun Balcony, the Mor Chowk Known for its beautiful peacock Mosaics ; the shrine of Dhuni Mata and the Museum of Rana Pratap are the highlights of this complex.
• Jagdeesh Temple
  Close to the City Palace is the Jagdish Temple which houses some imposing sculpted figures and heavily ornamented interiors. At a short distance is the Sahelion-ki-Bari or the Garden of Maidens which has four pools and delicately carved kiosks and elephants in marble. Built in the early 18th century, this is now a popular tourist spot.
• The Lake Palace
  The Lake Palace in marble, that seems to be floating on the Lake Pichola is the main attraction of Udaipur. This place has now been transformed to a luxury hotel, which can be accessed by boat from the city palace which overlooks it.
• Ahar
  Archaeological ruins that date back to 4000 B.C. are found here. A museum stands next to the excavation site. Also of interest are the beautiful cenotaphs of kings near the Gangabhairu tank.

• By Air
  The airport at Udaipur air links it with other major cities of India like Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Aurangabad, and Mumbai.
• By Road
  Udaipur can be easily reached by road as well. There are well-maintained roads linking it to tourism destinations in Rajasthan and neighbouring states of Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
• By Train
  The railway network connects Udaipur with Delhi, Chittor, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Ajmer, and Jodhpur.
