Pushkar is one of the most famous Hindu pilgrimage sites and it is said that a dip in the sacred lake of Pushkar is akin to the visits to the four main Hindu shrines known as 'Chaar Dhaam'. The charming lake of Pushkar is surrounded by hills on three sides and sand dunes on the fourth and presents an ideal site for the religious and cattle fair, which is held every year in the month of October or November. Pushkar alone has more than 400 temples and is said to be the only place with a temple dedicated to Lord Brahma, one of the most important member of the Holy Trinity of Hindus who is known as 'The Creator'). According to Hindu mythology, all the gods visit Pushkar for five days in a year to bless the devout and absolve them of their sins. There are many legends associated to the origin of Pushkar and Pushkar Fair but they have one thing in common. They are all associated with Lord Brahma. A visit to pushkar Fair is an experience of a lifetime and is certainly not worth a miss.

Where to Eat?
Pushkar is studded with a number of eateries and its air is filled with an aroma of their mouth-watering delicacies. There are quite a lot of rooftop and garden restaurants where you can leisurely enjoy a good meal. For non-vegetarians and alcohol-lovers, Pushkar may prove a big challenge as not only meat and alcohol, even eggs are not allowed in this one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage place. Buffet meals are quite popular here.

Climate
Pushkar has an extreme desert climate, which has hot, scorching days and cold nights in summers while the winters are pleasanter and the temperature ranges around 10ºC. The rainfall is scanty.

Attractions in Jaisalmer
  • Brahma Temple
    The most important temple in the world where Lord Brahma worshipped. This temple is the only temple dedicated to Brahma. Brahma the Hindu god of creation, four headed facing and all four directions symbolizing his presence everywhere. The temple has marble floors and stairs and coins have been put by the devotees to mark the the births and deaths of their loved ones.
  • Pushkar Lake
    Pushkar lake is another important attraction of Pushkar and it has immense significanse for the followers of Hinduism according to legend the lake was dedicated to Lord Brahma. The lake at Pushkar is called tirtharaj which means king of all holy places. Most hindu temples. Most hindu temples have a holy lake of river where devotees are supposed to take a dip to purify themselves before entering the temple.
  • Savitri Temple
    This temple is dedicated to 'Mata Savitri'. this is situated on the hill behind the Brahma temple and a long series of steps has to be climbed to reach it. It gives a beautiful picturesque view of the Pushkar Lake and the surrounding sand dune villages. According to legend while Brahma was performing a sacred rituals his wife Savitri not present. Since the presence was essential for rituals Brahma hastily married a local maiden. when Savitri heard about this she flew in to a rage.
  • Pushkar Palace
    Pushkar palace was built by Maharaja of Kishangarh about 400 years ago. Pushakar palace was situated on the edge of Pushkar Lake. It offers a panoramic view of Pushkar Lake 400 temples, banks sand dunes and the Aravalli Hills. Pushkar Palace is also now converted in to a hotel like Man Mahal.
  • Man Mahal
    This palace was built by Raja Man Singh of Ajmer and used by him on his trips to the holy town of the Pushkar. It is the largest royal house in Pushkar. The palace is located on the east of Sarovar the sacred lake in Pushkar and gives clear views of the bank and temples located and that around Sarovar. Now this mahal is treated as a traditional guest house.
  • Varah Temple
    Varah Temple built in 12th century, it was one of the many temple destroyed by emperor Aurangzeb. Later in 1727 it was reconstructed by Raja Sawai Jai Singh of Jaipur. The temple has elegant carvings and sculptures besides the richly ornamented image house.
Pushkar Fair
The holy town of Rajasthan is also famous for Pushkar Fair, which is held every November, held for seven days starts on Naomi, finishes on Kartik Poornima (Full Moon). Thousands of pilgrims throng the lake during the annual cattle fair and on the full moon of Kartik take a holy dip in the lake. Its an occasion for holy villagers from far and near to gather together and enjoy a welcome break from their harsh life of the arid desert.

How To Reach
  • By Air
    Jaipur is the nearest airport to Pushkar, which in turn has daily flights to and from Delhi and Mumbai. It is also well connected with Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Ahmedabad, Aurangabad and Calcutta. The airport is not more than 20 km from the city centre.
  • By Road
    Pushkar is well linked to Ajmer by roads, which in turn is connected to the major cities of Rajasthan, Delhi and Mumbai.
  • By Train
    The nearest railway station to Pushkar is Ajmer. Ajmer has a good network of trains that connect it to Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and other major cities of the country. You can catch Shatabdi Express from New Delhi for Ajmer.
