One of the most beautiful places of tourist's interest in India is Jodhpur. Situated in the arid land of Rajasthan, this place was founded by Rajput Chief Rao Jodha in 1459. Rao Jodha is the descendent of King Ramachandra of Ramayana. Earlier, it was the capital of the Marwar state of Rajasthan. Jodhpur is surrounded by a tall stonewall of about 10 kms. long. This wall has got eight doors facing various directions leading to different places of Jodhpur. Some of the gates are known as, Nagori gate, Sajoti gate, Merti gate, Jalori gate, Siwanchi gate etc. Jodhpur is a beautiful small city with the golden sands covering the thorny shrub growing arid land. Jodhpur has about 100 towers most of which are surrounded by defensive battlements. Normally, guard's chambers could be seen along with these walls, which are considerably high armed with iron spikes on top of it.

The places around Jodhpur offer further insight into the regions religious, cultural and commercial past besides being interesting tourist spots in themselves. The desert hamlet presents a picturesque view and the forts converted into heritage hotels provide fascinating places to relax. Jodhpur celebrates the Marwar festival with great fun and joy. The two-day festival drenches everyone at Jodhpur in fun, folk music, folk dance and folklore.

Attractions in Jaisalmer

• Mehrangarh Fort
  The magnanimous fort is one of the most dynamic and largest forts of India and is located at the center of the city the fort spreads over 5km atop a 125m high hill. Initially, the construction of the fort was started by Rao Jodha in 1459, but most of the fort which stands today dates from the period of Jaswant Singh (1638-78).The fort with walls up to 36m high and 21m wide houses some of the most intricately adorned palaces with exquisitely carved panels, latticed windows and brilliant stained glass. There are three gates, (originally seven) each built to commemorate a particular victory
• Jaswant Thada
  Constructed in 1899, the white marble in commemoration of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Rare portraits of Jodhpur's rulers are, also, to be seen at Jaswant Thada.
• Girdikot and Sardar Market
  Located in the heart of Jodhpur, the Girdikot and Sardar market is a narrow alleys lead to quaint little shops selling textiles, antiques, silverware and a wide range of handicrafts. Nearby is the clock tower which is a prominent landmark.

  Jodhpur is well connected to all the major cities which includes Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Jaipur, Udaipur.
• By Bus
  Rajasthan Roadways run very comfortable deluxe & air conditioned buses from Delhi (Bikaner House, Nr. India Gate) to Jodhpur. The roads are very good, and it takes around 8-9 hrs from Jodhpur. You can also come by taxi.
• By Train
  Jodhpur is on the Broad Gauge and hence connected to all the metro cities of India. There are daily trains from Jaipur,Delhi, Mumbai & Kolkata.
